For your conversations

Psychology Today has an interesting article about how the meanings of emojis are changing across generations surprisingly quickly, making me feel old for using thumbs-up 👍.

English is my second language, and even though I started learning it in elementary school, it takes a long time to become fluent. Despite English being such a rich language, we only use so many words in daily conversations.

There's only a slim chance you would hear me using big words. But today, I'll try the opposite and use some unfamiliar words that are often overlooked (at least by me).

It may sound pretentious, but bear with me as I tell you about my mum's latest adventure with technology in an unusual way.

Pursuing my heliophilia (love of the sun), I sat in the garden the other day, soaking in what seemed to be the quintessence (most perfect example) of a spring day.
My phone buzzed. It was Mum. She'd finally discovered AI —thanks, Meta! She started telling me about her jibber-jabber (rapid and excited speech that is difficult to understand) with her new flibbertigibbet (someone who can't stop talking) companion, testing every Daedalian (ingenious, intricate, and confusing) feature she could find.
When I responded with what I thought was a supportive thumbs-up, she called me lackadaisical (lacking enthusiasm) and sent an effervescent (lively, full of energy, bubbly) burst of emojis that left me completely flabbergasted (shocked).

End of story.

Are you still there? Wow, you must be a verbivore! (That's a person who enjoys words and wordplay.)

I admit, that story was a bit exaggerated. But writing about it was a fun experience as I discovered new words.

Now it's your turn. Pick a few mellifluous words and try to fit them into your conversations this week.

My first word of choice is "bumbershoot", which is another word for an umbrella. I plan to bamboozle as many people as possible this spring.

Happy Monday, Reader
